Jasmina Metwaly's incredible series 'Remarks on Medan (Tahrir Version)' is currently on display as part of DegreeArt's audio video exhibition. The exhibition acts as an introduction to moving image practice by presenting five separate areas created by artists working in the fields of contemporary film and video. The show is designed to guide the viewer through the new world of video art engaging with various types of moving image including single channel, multichannel, installation, performance and narrative video. Artists in the show also include Alex Ressell, Jessica Sarah Rinland, Sonny Sanjay Vadgama, George Petrou, Tobias Zehntner, Rachel Maclean and Dagmar Schurrer.
Jasmina’s work is presented in the first exhibition space as a showcase of the Video Painting movement. Comprising of 12 Video Paintings the series explores the circular experience of life in Tahrir and the almost impossible task of accurately capturing the moving world through a still video.
Jasmina describes the work as “situated somewhere between the moment and the memory. Remarks are like reminders that were once developed now turn into mirrors of themselves.” Medan means a town square or battlefield and the life captured within that public space makes for fascinating viewing.
Go see the show at 12A Vyner Steet London. Open until the 29th of July.
